Rikugien Garden – After the rain

Plans to walk in the park, always happily made, are often ruined by the kind of rain Tokyo sometimes to unleash without warning. Even though I come from England I am still surprised at the weather here and how it manages to drop a month’s worth of water on my head in a couple of hours. Still, we decided to brave it and were lucky as the downpour stopped right before we got off the train at Rikugien Garden.

Located to the north of Tokyo, Rikugien Garden is easily accessible from either Ikebukuro or Ueno. It is a beautiful garden, set out in the Japanese style, with a pool and streams, and paths that take you through the trees and by the water. There are several famous spots where everyone will have their cameras out and it is probably impossible to take a bad photo of the gardens!

As with all perfect gardens, there is a teahouse serving hot drinks and pretty snacks for when you have had enough of the wandering and need to take a brief rest. And although spring does get a lot of attention with the pink blossoms of the cherry trees, I have to admit that the vivid autumn reds, oranges and yellows of the trees here will always rival them for a place in my heart.

Another perfect day under the trees in Tokyo’s Rikugien Garden, thank you Tomoka!
